What is Ahrefs Domain Rating (DR)?
Domain Rating (DR) is the Ahrefs score for the strength of a website's backlink profile, shown on a scale from 0 to 100. It looks at how many unique websites link to a domain with followed links, and how strong those linking websites are themselves.
The scale is logarithmic. Moving from DR 10 to DR 20 takes far fewer quality links than moving from DR 70 to DR 80. DR describes the whole domain, not a single page, and it is not a Google ranking factor. It is a quick way to compare the link authority of many sites side by side.
How to check the DR of multiple websites
- 1Paste your list of domains or URLs into the box, 1 per line. Full URLs are fine: the tool removes http, www and page paths for you, and skips duplicates.
- 2Type the characters from the captcha image. A new captcha is needed for every run.
- 3Click Check DR. Domains checked in the last 24 hours appear at once; new ones load in stages of about 50 per minute, which is the pace Ahrefs allows, so 1,000 new domains take around 20 minutes. Keep the page open while it runs.
- 4Sort the table by DR, copy it, or download it as Excel, PDF or CSV for your outreach sheet or client report.
What is a good Domain Rating?
A good DR depends on your niche and your competitors, so compare sites that compete for the same searches. As a general guide:
- 70 to 100: very strong. Major brands, news sites and large platforms.
- 50 to 69: strong. Well-known blogs, established businesses and trusted niche sites.
- 30 to 49: average. Growing sites with a solid base of real links.
- 10 to 29: weak. Newer or local sites with a small link profile.
- 0 to 9: very weak. New domains or sites with almost no links.
A local plumber with DR 20 can still beat a DR 60 website for local searches. Use DR to compare similar sites, not as a goal on its own.
When a bulk DR check saves you time
- Vetting guest post and link building lists before you pay for a placement.
- Filtering outreach prospects so you contact the sites worth your time first.
- Comparing your site with the competitors that rank above you.
- Checking expired or auction domains before you buy them.
- Adding authority numbers to SEO audits and client reports in minutes.
DR vs DA vs UR: what is the difference?
These scores sound alike but come from different companies and measure different things:
- Domain Rating (DR) by Ahrefs: the link strength of a whole domain, from 0 to 100.
- URL Rating (UR) by Ahrefs: the link strength of a single page.
- Domain Authority (DA) by Moz: Moz's own 0 to 100 prediction of how well a domain may rank, built from Moz's link index.
Because each company uses its own index and formula, the same site can have DR 45 and DA 30. Compare DR with DR and DA with DA. You can check Moz DA with our Domain Authority Checker. Domain Authority Checker
Why a domain can show DR 0, an error or a different score
- The domain is new or has no followed links from other websites yet, so Ahrefs rates it 0.
- The domain was typed with a mistake or does not exist. Check the spelling and try again.
- A seller showed an older screenshot. DR changes as links are gained and lost, so always check the live number.
- Another tool used a different metric. Moz DA, Majestic Trust Flow and Semrush Authority Score are not DR.
- Ahrefs was busy for a moment. Wait a minute and run the domain again.
How to increase your Domain Rating
- Publish genuinely useful content, such as original data, guides and free tools, that other sites want to link to.
- Earn links from relevant websites that already have a strong DR, not from link farms.
- Reclaim unlinked brand mentions and fix broken links that point to your site.
- Build relationships with partners, suppliers and industry media who can mention you.
- Be patient. DR grows with your link profile over months, and your score also moves when other sites grow.
Free limits and fair use
The Bulk DR Checker is free for everyone. Each run checks up to 20 unique domains for visitors, 100 with a free account and 1,000 on the Pro and Agency plans, and needs a fresh captcha, which keeps bots away and the tool fast for real users. Each connection can start up to 30 runs per hour, and a new run replaces the one still in progress.
Results come from the free Ahrefs Domain Rating API, which allows about 60 lookups a minute, so large lists load in stages and every result is kept for 24 hours. Checking the same domain again the same day is instant. Domain Rating by Ahrefs.
