Everything in SEO from content strategy to site architecture depends on doing this well. A site built on bad keyword research is a site that works hard to rank for things nobody searches.
Short answer: Keyword research is finding the specific words and phrases people use in search engines to find products, services, answers, or content related to your business or topic. Effective keyword research identifies not just which queries exist but which ones have the right search volume, competition level, and commercial relevance for your specific goals. What Keywords Are and Why They Form the Backbone of SEO
A keyword is any word or phrase a person types (or speaks) into a search engine when looking for something. Technically, "keyword" is a legacy term; modern search engines process natural language phrases, questions, and even voice queries that can be full sentences. In SEO practice, a "keyword" means any query that a real person uses to search for something, regardless of its length.
Keywords are the backbone of SEO because they define the connection between what your audience needs and what your content provides. If you publish content about topics that nobody searches for, you will have zero organic traffic regardless of the quality of the writing. If you target keywords with the wrong intent (your content answers a different question than the keyword implies), you will rank poorly because the content does not satisfy what searchers need. And if you target keywords where every competitor outranks you by a large authority margin, you may wait years for results in a competitive space. Keyword research is the process of avoiding all of these errors before writing a single word.
The entire content strategy for a website, from which blog posts to write to which product page copy to emphasize, follows directly from keyword research. It is not an optional preliminary step. It is the step that determines whether SEO work has a return on investment at all.
Example: A personal injury law firm in Miami, Florida spends 6 months publishing 40 blog posts about "the history of tort law," "famous legal cases from the 1800s," and "how the U.S. legal system evolved." Zero keyword research was done; the content team just wrote what interested them. Organic traffic? Under 200 monthly visitors to 40 articles. How to Use Seed Keywords to Start Research
A seed keyword is the starting point for keyword research: a short, broad word or phrase that describes your main topic, product, service, or industry. From seed keywords, you build outward to discover specific, targeted queries. Most keyword research begins with a set of 5 to 20 seed keywords that cover the main categories of your business or content area.
To identify seed keywords, think about: what your customers or readers would type to find you if they had never heard of your brand. Ignore brand names. Ignore jargon. Focus on the words a person with the problem you solve would naturally use. A B2B accounting software company's seed keywords might be: "accounting software," "invoicing software," "payroll software," "expense tracking tool," "QuickBooks alternative." From each of these seeds, you then explore variations, related terms, and specific sub-topics.
A useful brainstorming method is the customer language exercise: write down 5 problems your product or service solves, then write the most natural way a non-expert person with that problem would search for help. For a tax preparation service: "problem: filing taxes is confusing" becomes "how to file taxes," "tax filing deadline 2026," and "what documents do I need to file taxes." Each of these is a legitimate seed keyword with branches of specific queries underneath it.
Example: A meal prep service in Austin, Texas starts keyword research with 6 seed keywords: "meal prep," "meal delivery," "healthy meals," "prepared meals," "food delivery," and "weekly meal plan." Running each seed through a keyword tool reveals entirely different clusters. "Meal prep" surfaces hundreds of queries about DIY meal preparation at home, a different audience than their prepared-meal delivery service. "Prepared meals delivered" is a much more relevant seed that surfaces queries like "prepared meals delivered weekly Austin," "healthy prepared meal delivery near me," and "gluten-free meal delivery Austin" -- all directly tied to potential customers ready to order. Starting with the more precise seeds produces a keyword list that matches actual buyer queries rather than a mix of buyer queries and DIY recipe queries.
Understanding Search Volume and Why It Is Misleading Alone
Search volume is the estimated number of times a keyword is searched in a given period (usually reported as monthly average searches). Keyword tools like Ahrefs, Semrush, and Google Keyword Planner report search volume as their primary metric. It is the first number most people look at when evaluating a keyword, but it is frequently misinterpreted.
Search volume is misleading when used alone because: high search volume does not mean high business value (a query searched 50,000 times per month may produce zero customers if it is purely informational), low search volume does not mean a keyword is worthless (a query searched 50 times per month may produce 10 customers per month if it has extremely high purchase intent), and search volume data from keyword tools is always an approximation, not a precise count (Ahrefs and Semrush use models based on clickstream data and Google Keyword Planner figures, which are rounded to ranges for many queries).
The correct way to use search volume is as one factor among several. A keyword's value to your business is determined by: search volume (how many people search it), click-through rate to organic results (some queries trigger features like ads or direct answers that absorb clicks), conversion potential (how likely a visitor with this query is to become a customer or complete a valuable action), keyword difficulty (how hard it is to rank for), and relevance (how closely the topic matches what your site is about). Volume tells you the size of the potential audience; it does not tell you how much of that audience is worth reaching.
Example: An estate planning law firm in Chicago, Illinois evaluates 2 keywords. Keyword A: "estate planning" -- 74,000 monthly searches. Keyword B: "estate planning attorney Chicago" -- 480 monthly searches. A junior marketer focuses on keyword A because the volume is 150x higher. But an SEO analysis reveals: keyword A results are dominated by national informational sites (Investopedia, NerdWallet), the query has a very low commercial modifier, and the competition is extremely high. Keyword B has a clear commercial intent (people searching for an attorney to hire), local relevance (the firm serves Chicago), and moderate competition from other local law firms. Keyword B generates actual clients when targeted; keyword A would require enormous effort for a result that sends mostly informational readers who are not ready to hire a lawyer. The right choice is to pursue keyword B and the 200 related local queries around it.
What Keyword Difficulty (KD) Means and How to Interpret It
Keyword Difficulty (KD) is a metric provided by SEO tools (Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz, and others all have their own version) that estimates how hard it is to rank on page 1 of Google for a given keyword. It is typically expressed as a number from 0 to 100, where 0 means almost no competition and 100 means it would be extraordinarily difficult to rank even with a very strong website.
Every tool calculates KD differently. Ahrefs bases it primarily on the number and quality of referring domains pointing to the pages currently ranking in the top 10 results. Semrush uses a similar concept but with slightly different weighting. Because of these differences, a keyword that is KD 45 in Ahrefs might be KD 58 in Semrush. Do not compare KD scores across different tools as if they are the same metric. Use one tool consistently and develop a feel for what KD scores mean in that tool's specific context.
KD scores are also averages. They tell you the general level of competition but do not capture every factor. A keyword might have a KD of 30 (relatively easy) but the #1 result is a page from a domain with 50 years of history and 10,000 backlinks specifically to that page, making it effectively impossible to displace. Conversely, a keyword with KD 55 might have a #3 result that is a shallow, outdated page from a mediocre site, which represents a real opportunity despite the moderate difficulty score. Always look at the actual pages ranking, not just the KD number, before deciding whether to target a keyword.
As a general starting guideline for new or small sites (under 50 referring domains): target keywords with KD 0 to 25 for early content. For medium sites (50 to 500 referring domains): KD 25 to 50 is reasonable. For established sites with strong domain authority (500+ referring domains and demonstrated expertise): KD 50 to 70 is achievable. Targeting KD 80+ keywords is generally not productive unless you have a very strong, topically relevant site with exceptional content and significant link-building resources.
Example: A new photography education website in Portland, Oregon finds the keyword "photography tips for beginners" has 18,000 monthly searches and a KD score of 67 in Ahrefs. Looking at the actual ranking pages: all top 10 results are from established photography magazines (Digital Photography School, Digital Camera World, PetaPixel) with thousands of referring domains each. The new site has 12 referring domains. Targeting this keyword directly is not realistic. But a related keyword cluster reveals: "long exposure photography tips for beginners" (KD 18, 900 monthly searches), "portrait photography tips beginners" (KD 22, 1,200 monthly searches), and "beginner wildlife photography tips" (KD 12, 600 monthly searches). Each of these subtopic keywords has much lower competition, and ranking for all 3 plus related cluster content can collectively build the topical authority needed to eventually compete for the broader "photography tips for beginners" term a year later.
Short-Tail vs. Long-Tail Keywords: Which to Target and When
Short-tail keywords (also called head keywords) are short, broad queries with high search volume and high competition. Usually 1 to 2 words. Examples: "insurance," "coffee," "web design." Long-tail keywords are specific, detailed queries with lower individual search volume but usually much lower competition and often higher purchase intent. Usually 4 or more words. Examples: "affordable renters insurance for apartments in Nashville," "best coffee subscription for light roast lovers," "web design agency for dental practices."
The relationship between tail length and business value is counterintuitive to most beginners. The instinct is to target the highest-volume keywords because more searches means more potential traffic. The reality is that long-tail keywords typically convert better (because specificity implies intent), have lower KD (because fewer competitors have bothered to create content for highly specific queries), and collectively represent the majority of all searches performed (roughly 70% of all Google searches are queries that individually occur fewer than 10 times per month, according to Ahrefs data).
The correct approach is not to choose one over the other but to target both strategically. Short-tail keywords form the foundation of your top-level pillar pages and service pages, which you work to rank for over time as your domain authority grows. Long-tail keywords are targeted immediately in blog posts, FAQ pages, and detailed guides, where lower competition allows faster rankings and immediate organic traffic. Think of short-tail keywords as long-term investments and long-tail keywords as short-term wins that build domain authority that eventually supports ranking for the short-tail terms.
Example: A residential solar panel installation company in San Diego, California identifies "solar panels" as a primary short-tail keyword (KD 85, 246,000 monthly searches). Ranking for this is years away. But their keyword research reveals 80 long-tail variations they can target immediately: "cost of solar panels for 2,000 square foot home San Diego" (KD 14, 260 monthly searches), "how many solar panels to power a house California" (KD 18, 880 monthly searches), "solar panel installation timeline California" (KD 11, 140 monthly searches). They publish 80 focused articles over 6 months, each targeting a specific long-tail query. Total monthly organic traffic from these articles: 3,400 visitors. Total inquiries from these visitors: 22 per month. And a secondary benefit: the topical authority built from 80 solar-focused articles causes their core service page ("San Diego solar panel installation") to rise from position 18 to position 6 for that local service query without any additional link building.
How to Classify Keywords by Search Intent
Search intent is the underlying reason a person is performing a search: what they want to accomplish by searching. Google's algorithm is trained extensively to match search results to intent, which means content that does not match the intent of a keyword will not rank well for that keyword even if the content uses the keyword frequently. Intent classification is one of the most important analysis steps in keyword research.
The 4 main intent categories are: Informational (the searcher wants to learn something: "how does SEO work," "what is keyword difficulty," "why is my website not ranking"), Navigational (the searcher wants to find a specific website or page: "Facebook login," "Google Search Console," "Ahrefs pricing page"), Commercial Investigation (the searcher is evaluating options before making a decision: "best project management software," "Semrush vs Ahrefs," "top SEO agencies in New York"), and Transactional (the searcher is ready to take an action or make a purchase: "buy keyword research tool," "schedule SEO audit," "hire SEO consultant").
Understanding intent tells you what type of content to create for a keyword. An informational keyword needs a comprehensive, educational article or guide. A navigational keyword is usually your own brand page and requires no special content creation. A commercial investigation keyword needs a comparison, review, or listicle that helps the searcher evaluate options. A transactional keyword needs a product, service, or landing page that makes the desired action easy to take. Creating a blog post in response to a transactional keyword (or a product page in response to an informational keyword) is an intent mismatch that Google will penalize with poor rankings regardless of content quality.
Example: A cybersecurity company in Washington D.C. researches the keyword "SIEM software" (Security Information and Event Management). Search volume: 8,100/month. KD: 52. Before writing content, they analyze the SERP. The top 10 results include: 4 comparison articles ("best SIEM software 2026," "top 10 SIEM tools"), 3 explainer guides ("what is SIEM software," "how SIEM works"), and 3 vendor product pages. This mix suggests the dominant intent is commercial investigation (people evaluating SIEM tools) with secondary informational intent. Creating a detailed comparison article that covers the top SIEM platforms, their features, pricing, and ideal use cases matches this intent. Creating just a product page for their own SIEM tool would not rank well because it does not serve the comparison intent most searchers have. After publishing a comprehensive 4,500-word comparison guide, the article reaches position 7 within 4 months and drives 340 qualified monthly visitors who are actively evaluating SIEM software.
How to Do Keyword Research with Free Tools
Professional keyword research tools cost money, but free alternatives provide enough data for effective keyword research, especially for early-stage or budget-conscious projects. The key free tools and what they provide:
Google Search Console: Your own GSC property shows every query your site already ranks for, along with impressions, clicks, and average position. This is ideal for finding "low-hanging fruit" keywords where you already have impressions but are in positions 11 to 30, and where a targeted content update or new link could push you to page 1.
Google Keyword Planner: Available through Google Ads (requires creating an account, no payment needed). Shows search volume ranges for keywords and suggests related terms from a seed keyword. Volume data is shown in ranges rather than precise numbers for non-advertisers, which is less useful than paid tool data but still directionally accurate.
Google Search autocomplete and People Also Ask: Type a seed keyword into Google search and note the suggestions in the dropdown (these are real queries people search) and the People Also Ask boxes on the SERP. Both surfaces are data-rich sources of real user queries that any paid keyword tool would validate.
AnswerThePublic: Generates question-based keyword ideas organized by question words (who, what, where, when, why, how) from a seed keyword. Free tier allows a limited number of searches per day. Excellent for finding informational and FAQ-type keyword angles.
Ahrefs Webmaster Tools: Free for verified site owners (add your own domain). Shows all keywords your site ranks for in Ahrefs' database, backlink data for your own site, and basic organic traffic estimates. Does not provide competitor keyword data on the free plan but is very useful for analyzing your own performance.
Example: A freelance video editor in Nashville, Tennessee starts keyword research with zero budget. Using Google Keyword Planner (free), they find "video editing services" has 12,100 monthly searches. Using Google autocomplete on "video editing," they discover: "video editing services for YouTubers," "video editing services for small businesses," "video editing services for weddings," and "video editing services for real estate" as specific service niches, each representing a different target audience. Using People Also Ask, they find: "How much does video editing cost?", "What software do professional video editors use?", and "How long does video editing take?" as content ideas. Using AnswerThePublic, they find 40 question-based variations around "video editing." How to Do Keyword Research with Paid Tools
Paid keyword research tools provide data that free tools cannot: precise search volume, accurate keyword difficulty scores, competitor traffic analysis, SERP feature tracking, keyword gap analysis, and historical ranking data. The 3 most widely used paid tools are Ahrefs, Semrush, and Moz. Each costs roughly $100 to $250 per month for individual plans.
The core workflow in any paid keyword tool for discovering new keyword opportunities is: enter a seed keyword in the Keywords Explorer (Ahrefs) or Keyword Magic Tool (Semrush), filter by volume minimum (typically 100+ monthly searches), filter by KD maximum appropriate for your site's authority, and export the resulting list for further analysis. Paid tools also let you set a minimum Traffic Potential filter (Ahrefs), which estimates the total organic traffic a page targeting a keyword would receive from all keyword variations it would rank for, not just the one keyword you searched -- this is often more informative than individual keyword volume.
Competitor keyword analysis is another major capability of paid tools. Enter a competitor's domain to see all keywords they rank for, which pages drive the most traffic, and which keywords they rank highly for that you do not rank for at all. This keyword gap is often the fastest source of keyword opportunities, because your competitors have already validated that these keywords generate traffic in your market.
Semrush's Keyword Gap tool and Ahrefs' Content Gap tool directly compare your keyword rankings to one or more competitors and surface keywords where competitors rank but you do not, or where you rank lower. This analysis takes 10 minutes and typically produces hundreds of immediately actionable keyword targets.
Example: A home security company in Denver, Colorado uses Ahrefs Content Gap to compare their domain against 3 competitor home security companies. The analysis reveals: 340 keywords where all 3 competitors rank in the top 20 but the company has no ranking at all. Filtering this list to: KD under 40, volume over 200, and excluding branded competitor terms, they find 45 keywords including "home security camera outdoor wired," "home security monitoring without contract," "how to install home security system yourself," and "best doorbell camera for apartment." These represent content and product page opportunities the competitors have capitalized on but the company has missed. How to Identify Low-Competition, High-Value Keyword Opportunities
Low-competition, high-value keywords are the most important target for any site without dominant authority. These are keywords where: the existing ranking pages have weaknesses (thin content, outdated information, low authority domains, poor user experience), the keyword has demonstrated commercial or conversion value, and the search volume is sufficient to generate meaningful traffic when ranked.
The methods for finding these opportunities are: KD filtering (explained above), SERP quality analysis (manually examining the actual pages ranking for a keyword to identify weaknesses you can exploit), freshness gaps (keywords where the top results are 3 to 5 years old and could be displaced by fresh, updated content), and user experience gaps (keywords where ranking pages are technically functional but hard to read, poorly structured, or not answering the full question a searcher has).
A systematic way to find low-competition opportunities is to look for keywords in the KD 10 to 35 range where the traffic potential is high (meaning many related keyword variations exist, so a page targeting the primary keyword could rank for 20 to 100 related variations simultaneously). Ahrefs shows this as "Traffic Potential" separately from volume. A keyword with 500 monthly searches and Traffic Potential of 4,200 means a well-optimized page for that keyword could realistically receive 4,200 monthly organic visitors by ranking for all related queries -- significantly more than the primary keyword volume suggests.
Example: An online bookkeeping service in Portland, Oregon researches "bookkeeping software for freelancers." KD: 22. Volume: 1,400/month. Traffic Potential: 8,900/month. Examining the current top 10 SERP: positions 3, 5, and 7 are pages from 2020 and 2021 with no 2026 update, listing software that has since changed pricing or features. Position 8 is a brief 600-word listicle with no detail on pricing, user interface, or ideal use case. There is a clear quality gap and a freshness gap. The bookkeeping service publishes a 3,800-word guide reviewing 9 freelancer bookkeeping tools with current 2026 pricing, screenshots, and specific use case recommendations (best for solopreneurs, best for creatives, best for high-volume invoice needs). Within 3 months, the guide ranks #3. Within 6 months, it reaches #1 and generates 6,700 monthly organic visitors, exceeding the Traffic Potential estimate, and drives 55 free trial signups per month.
How to Use Question Keywords and PAA for Content Ideas
Question keywords are search queries phrased as questions: "how to," "what is," "why does," "when should," "which is better." These keywords are particularly valuable for 2 reasons: they map directly to informational intent (making content planning straightforward) and they frequently trigger featured snippets and People Also Ask (PAA) boxes in Google results, which can drive traffic even from a non-top-3 ranking position.
People Also Ask (PAA) is a Google SERP feature that shows a dynamically expanding accordion of related questions that other people searched. When you click a PAA question, a short answer appears, sourced from a page Google finds most relevant. Each PAA box also generates new related PAA questions when expanded, creating an endless tree of related queries. Mining PAA boxes for a seed keyword is one of the most efficient ways to build an FAQ content plan or identify what sub-questions your target audience is asking around a main topic.
Tools for extracting PAA data at scale include: AlsoAsked (also named "AlsoAsked.com"), which generates visual mind maps of PAA questions from any seed, and AnswerThePublic, which organizes question keywords by question word. Both tools surface the exact phrasing real searchers use, which should be used verbatim as H2 or H3 subheadings in articles. Google matches the text of PAA answers by looking for clear question-answer pairings in the HTML, so formatting your answer directly after the question heading (with a concise 40 to 60 word answer followed by detailed explanation) is the correct structure for capturing PAA placement.
Example: A mortgage lender in Austin, Texas mines PAA boxes for the seed keyword "mortgage refinancing." They find 60 unique questions including: "When is it worth it to refinance your mortgage?", "How much does it cost to refinance a home?", "Can you refinance a mortgage if you have bad credit?", "How many times can you refinance your house?", "What credit score do you need to refinance?" How to Organize Keywords Before You Create Any Content
Keyword organization is the bridge between keyword research and content creation. Without organization, a list of 500 keywords is unusable. With proper organization, a keyword list becomes a clear content plan where every piece of content has a defined purpose, a primary target keyword, and a cluster of supporting keywords.
The keyword organization process has 4 steps. Step 1: Group keywords by topic (all keywords about "home insurance deductibles" belong together, all keywords about "home insurance for renters" belong together, etc.). Step 2: Identify the primary keyword for each group (the highest-volume, most commercially relevant keyword in the group, which becomes the page's target keyword). Step 3: List supporting keywords for each group (related queries that the same page should also rank for by addressing them in the content). Step 4: Assign each group to a content type (is this a service page? a blog post? a product page? an FAQ? a comparison guide?).
A common mistake at this stage is assigning 2 different pages to target the same keyword or the same intent. This creates keyword cannibalization: 2 of your own pages competing against each other in Google for the same query, which splits your link equity and confuses Google about which page is the authoritative answer. Each search intent should have exactly one page targeting it on your site. If 2 existing pages target the same intent, they need to be consolidated into one stronger page.
Example: A commercial cleaning company in Minneapolis, Minnesota completes keyword research and has a list of 200 keywords. After grouping them, they find 8 distinct topic clusters: office cleaning, medical facility cleaning, school cleaning, restaurant cleaning, carpet cleaning, window cleaning, post-construction cleaning, and green cleaning services. Each cluster has 15 to 30 keywords. For each cluster, they identify the primary keyword (e.g., "commercial office cleaning Minneapolis" for the office cluster) and 12 supporting keywords (e.g., "office cleaning services near me," "weekly office cleaning contract," "how much does commercial office cleaning cost in Minnesota"). Instead of writing 200 separate thin pages, they write 8 comprehensive service pages that each target 15 to 30 related queries, producing far stronger individual pages that cover their topic in full depth rather than 200 thin pages competing against each other.

- Targeting keywords purely based on high search volume without evaluating commercial relevance, KD, or search intent.
- Ignoring long-tail keywords because individual volumes seem too small, missing out on the 70% of search traffic that comes from specific queries.
- Using search volume from one keyword tool and KD from another, then comparing them as if they are compatible metrics.
- Creating content without first verifying the search intent of the target keyword, resulting in content that does not match what searchers want.
- Targeting the same keyword or intent with multiple pages, creating keyword cannibalization that splits link equity and confuses Google.
- Doing keyword research once and never revisiting it, missing new query trends, seasonal shifts, and emerging competitor opportunities.
