On-page SEO is every optimization you make directly on a web page to help it rank for its target keyword. Unlike link building (which happens off your site) or technical SEO (which happens in infrastructure), on-page SEO is fully in your control on every page you publish. Getting it right on every page is one of the highest-leverage activities in SEO because it compounds: every optimized page helps the entire site.
Short answer: On-page SEO is the practice of optimizing individual web pages so that search engines clearly understand their topic, their relevance to specific search queries, and their value to users. It covers the HTML elements (title tag, meta description, headings, image alt text), the content itself (depth, accuracy, format), and the user experience signals (readability, engagement) that Google evaluates when ranking a page. This lecture covers every on-page element with detailed guidance on correct optimization for each.

How to Write Title Tags That Rank and Get Clicked
The title tag is the single most important on-page SEO element. It tells search engines the primary topic of the page, appears as the clickable blue link in Google search results, and appears in the browser tab when someone has your page open. Getting it right requires balancing 3 objectives: including the primary keyword (for relevance), communicating clear value (for click-through rate), and keeping it within the character limit (to avoid truncation in search results).
The character limit for title tags is approximately 600 pixels wide in Google's display, which corresponds to roughly 55 to 65 characters for most fonts. Title tags longer than 65 characters frequently get truncated in search results with an ellipsis (...), cutting off the end of the title. Keep your most important information (primary keyword and clearest value statement) within the first 55 characters.
The primary keyword should appear as early in the title tag as possible. Google gives slightly more weight to words that appear earlier in the title. "Keyword Research Tools: 11 Best Options for 2026" is stronger than "11 Best Options for Keyword Research in 2026." The keyword is front-loaded in the first example. Avoid "title tag stuffing" (repeating the keyword multiple times in the title): "Best SEO Tools | SEO Tools for Beginners | Top SEO Tools" is a violation of Google's spam guidelines and will be penalized.
Effective title tag formulas: Primary Keyword + Modifier + Year ("Keyword Research Tools: 11 Best Options for 2026"), How-to Format ("How to Do Keyword Research: Step-by-Step for Beginners"), Number + Keyword + Benefit ("7 Proven SEO Strategies That Increase Traffic in 90 Days"), Question Format ("What Is Keyword Research and Why Does It Matter?"), and Comparison Format ("Ahrefs vs Semrush: Which SEO Tool Is Right for You?"). The right formula depends on the dominant format of the SERP for the target keyword, identified through SERP analysis (covered in Lecture 5).
Example: A corporate catering company in Chicago, Illinois has a page targeting the keyword "corporate catering Chicago." Their current title tag: "Corporate Catering Services - Fresh Meals Delivered to Your Office - Chicago." That is 72 characters, truncated in search results to "Corporate Catering Services - Fresh Meals Delivered to Your Office" -- losing "Chicago" entirely, which is the geographic qualifier that makes the page relevant to local searchers. After updating to "Corporate Catering Chicago | Office Meals Delivered" (51 characters, keyword first, geographic modifier visible), the title appears fully in search results, the geographic qualifier is prominent, and the click-through rate increases from 2.3% to 4.1% within 3 weeks, generating 41% more monthly visitors to the page with no change in ranking position.
How to Write Meta Descriptions That Drive Click-Through Rate
The meta description is the 2 to 3 line text snippet that appears below the title link in search results. It does not directly affect ranking (Google has confirmed it is not a direct ranking factor), but it is a critical driver of click-through rate. A compelling meta description that sets clear expectations and communicates specific value will generate more clicks from the same ranking position, delivering more traffic without any improvement in ranking.
Meta descriptions should be 130 to 155 characters in length. Shorter descriptions waste the available display space. Longer descriptions get truncated. Write as close to 155 characters as possible while keeping the most important information before the 130-character mark (where truncation is more likely on mobile).
A high-performing meta description does 4 things: states what the page covers (the main topic or answer), includes the primary keyword or a close variation (Google bolds the search query terms in the description, making keyword-matching descriptions more visually prominent), communicates a specific value or benefit ("with current 2026 data," "including step-by-step examples," "covering pricing, features, and our top pick"), and includes a call to action when appropriate ("Learn more," "Compare all options," "See the full guide").
Google frequently rewrites meta descriptions when it determines that the provided description does not accurately match the page content or the search query. If Google is consistently rewriting your meta descriptions, it usually means: the provided description is too short, does not closely match the query terms, or does not accurately summarize the most relevant part of the page content. The fix is to write a longer, more comprehensive description that accurately summarizes the page's key content and includes the target keyword in a natural sentence.
Example: A tax preparation firm in Miami, Florida has the meta description: "We offer tax preparation services. Contact us today." This is 49 characters, has no keyword, and communicates nothing specific. Google consistently rewrites it by extracting random text from the page. After updating to: "Miami tax preparation by licensed CPAs. Get your federal and state returns filed accurately, on time, with maximum deductions found. Free consultation available." (161 characters -- slightly over but the most important content is within 155), click-through rate on the "tax preparation Miami" keyword increases from 1.8% to 4.6%. The specific claims (licensed CPAs, federal and state, maximum deductions, free consultation) address the searcher's primary concerns about quality, scope, and risk in one sentence. Google stops rewriting the description because it accurately summarizes the page's core value proposition.
How to Use H1, H2, and H3 Headings Correctly
Heading tags (H1 through H6) are HTML elements that define the hierarchical structure of content on a page. H1 is the top-level title of the page. H2 tags are the main sections. H3 tags are subsections within H2 sections. For SEO, headings serve two functions: they signal to search engines the major topics and sub-topics the page covers, and they improve readability for users who scan before committing to read.
The H1 tag rule: each page should have exactly one H1 tag, and it should closely match or be identical to the title tag. The H1 is the on-page heading that introduces the article or page to the reader. Having zero H1 tags is a technical error that makes it harder for search engines to identify the page's primary topic. Having multiple H1 tags (a common error in some CMS configurations) dilutes the primary topic signal. Most CMS platforms automatically make the post or page title the H1, but it is worth confirming this in the source code, especially on custom-built sites.
H2 tags should be used for the major sections of the page. Each H2 should represent a distinct, significant sub-topic of the page's main theme. Including the primary keyword or a direct variation in one or two H2 headings is appropriate and helpful. Do not force the keyword into every H2 heading; this looks unnatural and provides minimal additional signal. Including relevant related terms (LSI keywords) in H2 and H3 headings helps search engines understand the full scope of the page's topical coverage.
H3 tags subdivide H2 sections. They are appropriate when an H2 section is complex enough to benefit from internal organization. Not every H2 section needs H3 sub-headings; short sections of 200 to 300 words typically do not need them. Avoid using H3 (or lower) tags when the same organization could be achieved with a bulleted list, which is visually cleaner and equally readable.
Example: A home security company in Phoenix, Arizona has a page targeting "home security systems." Their current heading structure: H1 "Home Security Systems" (correct), then 14 H2 headings including "Our Products," "Our Services," "About Our Company," "Why Choose Us," "Customer Reviews," "Contact Us," and "FAQ." Several of these are navigation headings, not content section headings, and none are question-based or keyword-relevant. After restructuring: H1 "Home Security Systems: Complete Guide for Homeowners in 2026," H2 sections covering "Types of Home Security Systems," "How to Choose the Right System for Your Home," "Wired vs. Wireless Home Security: Key Differences," "Home Security Installation: DIY vs. Professional," "How Much Does a Home Security System Cost?", "Home Security Monitoring Plans Compared," and "FAQ." This structure uses keyword-related H2 headings that map to what searchers actually want to know, and removes the non-content navigation headings. Rankings improve from position 14 to position 6 within 8 weeks of the restructure, reflecting the improved topical relevance signaling from the heading hierarchy.
How to Optimize URL Slugs for SEO
The URL slug is the part of the URL that identifies a specific page, typically everything after the domain name. For the URL yourdomain.com/blog/on-page-seo-guide, the slug is "on-page-seo-guide." A well-optimized URL slug is short, descriptive, uses hyphens between words, and includes the primary keyword. A poorly optimized slug is long, contains stop words, uses underscores, or contains no meaningful words at all.
Best practices for URL slugs: include the primary keyword (or the most important words from the keyword, excluding common stop words like "the," "a," "and," "how," "to"), keep it short (4 to 6 words is ideal; avoid slugs that are entire article titles), use lowercase letters only (URL paths are case-sensitive on most servers), use hyphens (not underscores, spaces, or other characters) to separate words, and avoid dynamic parameters in the slug (parameters like ?id=123 or &page=2 create URL variants that should be managed with canonical tags).
URL slugs should be set once and never changed without a comprehensive redirect plan. Every external link pointing to a specific URL is broken when the URL changes without a redirect. Internal links must also be updated. The SEO cost of changing a URL on a page with existing backlinks is significant and the recovery time is unpredictable. For new pages, set the correct slug before publishing. For existing pages with backlinks, only change the URL when the benefit clearly justifies the cost of the redirect infrastructure and the temporary ranking disruption during the transition.
Example: A restaurant management software company in Seattle, Washington has a blog post at the URL: yourdomain.com/blog/2024/01/15/how-to-manage-restaurant-inventory-effectively-and-why-it-matters-for-your-bottom-line. That slug is 85 characters, contains the date (which becomes outdated), and is far too long. An optimized slug for the same page: yourdomain.com/blog/restaurant-inventory-management. It is 36 characters, contains the primary keyword, has no date (making it evergreen), and reads cleanly. For a page that was just published with no external links yet, updating the slug immediately is the right action. For an existing page with 20 external links, the team creates a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one before announcing the URL change. All internal links are updated to the new slug. Rankings stabilize within 2 weeks after the redirect, and the cleaner URL generates a higher click-through rate in search results because it reads more clearly and confidently to users than the original long URL.
How to Use the Target Keyword Naturally Throughout Content
The primary target keyword should appear in specific places throughout a page for optimal relevance signaling, but it should never appear in a way that reads unnaturally or feels forced. Google's NLP (Natural Language Processing) systems are sophisticated enough to understand synonyms, related concepts, and semantic context, so keyword stuffing is counterproductive: it reads poorly to users and is actively flagged by spam detection.
The specific places where the primary keyword should appear, in order of importance: the title tag (covered above), the H1 heading, the first paragraph (ideally within the first 100 words of the page's body content), at least one H2 heading, the meta description, and the URL slug. These placements signal to search engines that the page is clearly about the target keyword without requiring artificial repetition throughout the rest of the content.
Within the body content, the keyword should appear naturally as part of sentences that discuss the topic. If you are writing about "email marketing automation" and naturally discuss automating email campaigns, scheduling drip sequences, and triggering emails based on user behavior, the keyword and its variations will appear organically throughout the content. You do not need to count occurrences or aim for a specific keyword density percentage. Write for the topic; the keyword will appear where appropriate.
LSI keywords (Latent Semantic Indexing keywords) are related terms, synonyms, and conceptually associated words that help search engines understand the full context of a page. For an article about "home insurance," LSI keywords include: coverage, premium, deductible, liability, dwelling, personal property, claim, adjuster, flood insurance, renters insurance. Including these terms naturally throughout the content (because they are part of the topic) helps search engines confirm the page is comprehensively about home insurance, not just a page that mentions the phrase a few times.
Example: A swimming pool installation company in Las Vegas, Nevada targets the keyword "inground pool installation cost." The article's first paragraph contains: "If you are planning an inground pool installation, cost is typically the first question homeowners ask. In Las Vegas, the average inground pool installation cost ranges from $35,000 to $85,000 depending on size, material, and features." The keyword appears naturally in the H1, the first sentence, and once more in the first paragraph. The rest of the article discusses pool materials (concrete, fiberglass, vinyl liner), excavation costs, permit requirements, landscaping considerations, ongoing maintenance costs, and financing options -- all natural parts of the topic that include relevant LSI terms (excavation, decking, coping, filtration, permit, HOA requirements) without forcing the primary keyword repeatedly. The article reaches position 3 for "inground pool installation cost Las Vegas" and position 8 for the broader "inground pool cost" within 4 months.
How to Optimize Images for SEO: Alt Text, File Names, and Compression
Images affect SEO in 3 ways: alt text provides a text description that search engines use to understand image content (since they cannot see images the way humans do), file names give additional context about the image subject, and file size directly impacts page load speed, which is a Core Web Vitals ranking factor. Optimizing all 3 is required for comprehensive on-page SEO.
Alt text (the "alt" attribute in an HTML img tag) should be a concise, accurate description of what the image shows. It should include the primary keyword if the image is directly relevant to the page's main topic, but only naturally. Alt text serves a dual purpose: SEO context AND accessibility (screen readers read alt text aloud for visually impaired users, so writing it as descriptive of the actual image content is both the SEO-correct and the ethically correct approach). Bad alt text: "image1.jpg" or keyword stuffing: "SEO SEO optimization SEO guide SEO tips." Good alt text: "Google Search Console Performance report showing keyword impressions and click-through rate data."
Image file names should be descriptive and use hyphens between words, just like URL slugs. Before uploading an image, rename the file from its camera default (DSC_0042.jpg or IMG_8293.png) to a descriptive name (google-search-console-performance-report.jpg). The file name is a small SEO signal that supports the alt text in communicating image content to search engines.
Image compression reduces file size without visually significant quality reduction, which directly improves page load speed. Modern image formats: WebP typically reduces file size by 25 to 34% compared to JPEG at the same quality level. AVIF provides even greater compression. For any image that is not a simple icon, use WebP format by default. Always declare width and height attributes in the HTML img tag so the browser can reserve the correct space during page load and avoid layout shift (which contributes to Cumulative Layout Shift, a Core Web Vitals metric).
Example: A food delivery platform in Houston, Texas has 200 food photography images on their restaurant partner pages, all uploaded as original DSLR camera files averaging 4.2MB each in JPEG format with auto-generated file names (IMG_5234.jpg). An image audit reveals: total image payload on their average restaurant page is 18.4MB, causing LCP scores of 6.8 seconds on mobile. After running all images through a WebP conversion tool (reducing average size to 380KB), renaming files descriptively ("houston-tex-mex-restaurant-enchiladas.webp"), adding descriptive alt text to all images, and declaring explicit width and height attributes, the average page LCP drops from 6.8 seconds to 2.3 seconds. Core Web Vitals in Search Console moves from 89% "Poor" to 71% "Good" over the following 28 days. How to Use Internal Links Strategically on Every Page
Internal links connect pages within the same website. Each internal link serves 2 functions: it helps users discover related content (improving user experience and site engagement), and it distributes "link equity" or "PageRank" from the linking page to the linked page (supporting the ranking of the destination page). Strategic internal linking is one of the most underutilized and highest-return on-page SEO activities.
Every page published on a site should link to at least 3 to 5 other relevant pages using descriptive, keyword-rich anchor text. Anchor text is the clickable text of a link. "Click here" and "read more" are non-descriptive anchor texts that provide no information to search engines about the content of the linked page. "Complete guide to on-page SEO" and "how to structure a URL for SEO" are descriptive anchor texts that tell search engines exactly what the linked pages cover.
Internal linking priorities: every piece of content should link to its pillar page (building the cluster structure), to relevant related cluster pages (for cross-content discovery), and to the most important commercial pages on the site (service pages, product pages, contact pages) when there is a natural, relevant reason to do so. Blog posts should link upward to pillar pages and sideways to related cluster pages. Pillar pages should link downward to all cluster pages. Service and product pages should receive internal links from as many relevant blog posts as possible, because these commercial pages are the ones that drive business outcomes and benefit most from accumulated internal link equity.
Example: A digital marketing agency in Los Angeles, California publishes a comprehensive guide on "email marketing for e-commerce." The guide covers subject line writing, segmentation, automation sequences, and abandoned cart emails. Strategic internal links in this guide: the "automation sequences" section links to their cluster article on "email marketing automation tools" (keyword-rich anchor text: "email automation tools"), the "abandoned cart" section links to their cluster article on "abandoned cart email best practices," and the conclusion section links with natural anchor text to their "email marketing services" page (a commercial page). The guide also links back to the pillar page "email marketing complete guide." This internal linking structure: passes link equity from a content-heavy article to both cluster articles and commercial pages, ensures all related articles are discoverable from a single piece, and builds the pillar-cluster topical authority structure. After 6 months of systematic internal linking across all articles, the agency's email marketing service page rises from position 18 to position 5 for "email marketing agency Los Angeles" driven largely by accumulated internal link equity from 24 related blog articles, each linking to it with relevant anchor text.
How to Use External Links to Support Credibility
External links (links from your page to other websites) are sometimes misunderstood as "passing away" your SEO value. In practice, linking to relevant, authoritative external sources is a positive quality signal. Google's quality guidelines indicate that helpful content should cite sources and reference authoritative information, particularly for factual claims, statistics, and recommendations. Pages that never cite external sources appear self-referential and less credible than pages that back up claims with references.
The guidelines for external links: link only to genuinely authoritative, relevant sources (official government sites like CDC.gov or IRS.gov for health and tax information, peer-reviewed journals, recognized industry publications, tools you recommend and that you have personally evaluated). Use the rel="nofollow" attribute on links to sites you are not completely confident in or cannot editorially vouch for. Use rel="nofollow noopener" for all links that open in a new tab for security reasons. Never link to direct competitors for commercial keywords, as this passes potential link equity to competing pages. Do not link to sites with questionable reputation, thin content, or that Google may have devalued.
Outbound link placement: include external links naturally within the body content where they support a specific claim or reference. Clustering all external links in a "references" section at the bottom is fine but less natural than inline citations. A page that links out to 3 to 5 high-quality sources throughout the content is more credible than either a page with zero external links or one with 50 links to random sites at the bottom.
Example: A personal finance blog in New York, New York publishes an article on "maximum 401(k) contribution limits for 2026." The article makes several factual claims about IRS-determined contribution limits. Linking directly to the IRS official announcement page (irs.gov) for the specific contribution limit data backs up the claim with the primary government source, which is exactly what a credible personal finance article should do. The article also links to the Social Security Administration's website for Social Security tax limit data. These 2 government source links are added with rel="nofollow" (since the blog cannot audit government site maintenance) and open in a new tab. Readers trust the information more because the primary sources are directly linked and verifiable. Google's quality systems recognize the citation pattern as consistent with high-quality financial information pages. The article ranks position 2 for "401k contribution limits 2026" and earns a featured snippet for the exact contribution limit amount because the structured data (the specific number in context with the IRS citation) is clearly and precisely presented.
How Schema Markup Enhances On-Page Visibility
Schema markup is structured data code added to a page's HTML that explicitly tells search engines what type of content the page contains and the specific attributes of that content. Instead of search engines having to interpret unstructured HTML to determine what a page is about, schema markup provides machine-readable metadata that enables rich results (enhanced visual displays in search results).
The most impactful schema types for different page categories: Article and BlogPosting schema (for content pages, enables publication date and author display), FAQPage schema (for pages with FAQ sections, enables expandable question-answer pairs directly in search results), HowTo schema (for step-by-step guides, enables numbered step display in search results), Product schema (for e-commerce product pages, enables star ratings, price, and availability in results), LocalBusiness schema (for local service businesses, enables address, hours, and rating display), Recipe schema (for food content, enables ingredient and time display), and Review schema (for review or comparison pages, enables star rating aggregates in results).
Schema markup does not directly improve ranking but substantially improves click-through rate by making your result visually richer and more informative than standard results. A FAQ result that shows 3 expandable questions in the search result takes up significantly more SERP real estate than a standard result and draws more attention. A product result with a star rating and price is more compelling than a result with just a title and description. Rich results from schema consistently drive 10 to 30% higher click-through rates for the same ranking position.
Example: A recipe website in Nashville, Tennessee adds Recipe schema markup to all 340 recipe pages. The schema specifies: recipe name, author, total preparation and cooking time, calorie count per serving, ingredient list, step-by-step instructions, and user rating aggregate. Within 60 days of schema implementation, 280 of the 340 recipe pages qualify for rich recipe results in Google. For pages that gain rich results, click-through rates increase an average of 41% compared to the same pages before schema (when they showed as standard results). Monthly organic sessions increase 34% year-over-year after schema implementation with no additional content creation, link building, or ranking position changes -- the increase is entirely from improved click-through rate on the same positions.
How to Write Introduction Paragraphs That Reduce Bounce Rate
The introduction paragraph is the first content a visitor reads after arriving from search. If the introduction does not immediately confirm that the page is answering the question they came to have answered, visitors leave within 10 to 30 seconds. Google measures this behavior through user signals (though the exact signals and weights are not disclosed), and pages with consistently high bounce rates from organic search may be demoted over time as the signal pattern suggests users are not satisfied with the result.
The PAS (Problem-Agitate-Solution) formula works well for SEO article introductions: open by naming the specific problem or question the reader has (confirming you understand why they searched), briefly characterize why this problem matters or why it is frustrating (creating connection), and then state clearly that the article will solve it (creating reason to continue reading). This structure should be completed in 3 to 5 sentences, not 3 to 5 paragraphs. Readers who searched a specific question do not want a lengthy preamble before you get to the answer.
The inverted pyramid principle (from journalism) is also highly effective: lead with the most important information first, then provide supporting context and detail. For an SEO article, this means: answer the question briefly in the introduction, then expand on the answer in subsequent sections. This contrasts with "tell them what you will tell them, tell them, then tell them what you told them" structures that bury the actual answer and frustrate scan-reading visitors.
Example: A technology education platform in Austin, Texas has an article about "how to become a data scientist." The original introduction: "Data science is one of the fastest-growing fields in the world. Companies everywhere are looking for qualified data scientists. With the right education and skills, you too can join this exciting field. In this article, we will cover everything you need to know about becoming a data scientist, including the skills you need, the education required, the salary you can expect, and the job market outlook." This is 73 words of preamble with zero new information. A searcher already knows data science is fast-growing; that is why they searched. After rewriting: "Becoming a data scientist in 2026 typically takes 6 to 18 months of focused learning, depending on your starting point. Most entry-level roles require Python, SQL, statistics fundamentals, and proficiency with at least one machine learning framework like scikit-learn or TensorFlow. This guide covers the exact roadmap, free and paid learning resources, and how to build a portfolio that gets you hired." Three sentences. Direct answer in sentence one. Specifics in sentence two. Value promised in sentence three. Average time-on-page increases from 1:24 to 3:47 after the introduction rewrite, and bounce rate drops from 74% to 51%, reflecting that visitors now immediately confirm the article is what they were looking for.
On-Page SEO Checklist: Every Element Before Publishing
This checklist covers every on-page element that should be reviewed before any page is published or updated. Use it as a pre-publication review for every piece of content produced under your SEO strategy.
- Title tag: Contains primary keyword (as early as possible), is 55 to 65 characters, communicates specific value, and does not repeat the keyword more than once.
- Meta description: Is 130 to 155 characters, includes primary keyword or close variation, communicates specific value or benefit, has a call to action if appropriate.
- URL slug: Contains primary keyword (abbreviated if needed), uses hyphens, is lowercase, is 4 to 6 words maximum, contains no stop words or dates.
- H1: Exactly one H1 on the page, closely matching or identical to the title tag.
- Heading hierarchy: H2 headings cover main sub-topics logically, H3 headings subdivide where needed, no skipped heading levels (H1 to H3 with no H2).
- Primary keyword placement: Appears in H1, first 100 words, at least one H2, and naturally throughout without forced repetition.
- Introduction: Gets to the point within 3 to 5 sentences, confirms the searcher's question is being answered, does not start with "In today's world" or similar generic filler.
- Images: All images have descriptive alt text, have descriptive file names (hyphens, lowercase, no camera defaults), are in WebP format, have declared width and height attributes, and are compressed under 200KB where possible.
- Internal links: At least 3 to 5 internal links with descriptive anchor text, linking to pillar page, relevant cluster pages, and where appropriate to commercial pages.
